First edition. Octavo, pp xi, 424, folding map of China at rear. Bound in red cloth covered hard boards, with gilt lettering and Chinese characters in black to the spine and upper board. The book has been re-cased with the original spine laid on and is with new endpapers. Edward Parker (1849-1926) was an English barrister and sinologist who worked for the Imperial Consular Service, including time spent in Wenzhou and Shanghai, until 1896 and then became an author and academic and wrote widely on the Opium Wars and on Chinese language. In this book he discusses Chinese history, the Boxer rebellion, his time working as a consular official in China, Chinese government and the Mandarin class, political matters and much else.
