Item description from seller

xcvi, 531, publisher's red cloth gilt with blind stamped decoration to spine and covers, 3 pages of Bohn's adverts serving as paste downs and end papers. Back board detached, gathers uneven, shaken. Several ownership inscriptions, some crossed-out, including one on the dedicatory frontispiece "Presented to the Croydon Workmen's Chess Club by Geo. W. Medley (Presdt.) 15 June 1866" the author of the Account. In 1860, he lost a match to Ignatz Von Kolisch. Against Medley, Ignatz Von Kolisch sometimes took two hours for three moves. After this match, there was a push to have a time limit in chess, which led to the introduction of sand glasses and clocks in chess. In the British Chess Magazine May and June 1888 Augustus Mongredien wrote "G.W.M. (1835¿70).¿One of our strongest English players, many fine specimens of whose play are recorded in our Chess annals. I have before alluded to him as having been for many years honorary secretary to the London Chess Club, and also to the British Chess Association. We played many games together, with about even results.".
