Item description from seller

Complete 18 volume illustrated set. Undated but probably early 20th Century. Each volume is illustrated by Harry Furniss. There are 1,200 illustrations in total with 500 of these created especially for this Dickens set. Each volume also has an introduction by J.A. Hammerton who also wrote the final two volumes - a picture book and a reference book. Original blue cloth with gilt lettering and decorations to spines and a gilt decoration at the centre of the front panel. In general there is only light edge and surface wear to the boards. Tops of pages gilt edged. Browning and a few light marks to the fore edges and bottom edges. Some light spotting in places but the pages are generally clean and unmarked. Vol.1, Sketches by Boz, has a small tear at the bottom of the first page of the introduction. Vol. 2, The Pickwick Papers, has some light staining to the boards, creasing at the top of the spine and a tear along the hinge at the rear endpapers. Vol. 4, Nicholas Nickleby, has some light staining to the boards, creasing at the centre of the spine and a tear along the hinge at the rear endpapers. Vol. 5, The Old Curiosity Shop and Hard Times, has some light staining to the boards and a tear along the hinge at the front endpapers.
