About this Item
Very scarce (only two UK copies- BL & Oxford- recorded in WorldCat). 24 articles contributed from a wide range of professors, historians, government officials and military men mainly from India but including some from Germany, Russia and Italy. As-issued hardback, hand-bound in Indian handloom cloth, with white lettering, by the Art Printing Union Works, Calcutta. pp. xvi, 354, xlv, [5]. Illustrated with b&w portraits, maps and archive typescripts from WW2. Inscribed to ffep: "On behalf of Scottish Church College Family 26/11/09". Unclipped, illustrated yellow wrapper as issued with a little light shelf-wear. Subhas Chandra Bose (1897-1945?) was an Indian statesman and nationalist, considered to be a war criminal in the West but honoured by others in the Indian sub-continent. In 1927 after being released from prison, he became general secretary of the Congress Party and worked with Nehru for Indian independence. He was in Germany 1941-1943 where he had instituted his Free India Centre and Special Bureau for India and broadcasting on Azad Hind Radio. He left for Japan in 1943 and established the Indian National Army to help fight the British. His alleged death in 1945 in a plane crash is contested. The essays deal with a wide range of aspects of his life, including the mysteries of his life and death and an untold account of the INA's Kohima Offensive. Two essays are in Bengali. The extensive appendices include many archived official typescript documents from the 1940s including Fifth Column activity in India. Now 40% price reduction applied. Seller Inventory # 000634
