Item description from seller

Patterson, Annabel M. Censorship and Interpretation: The Conditions of Writing and Reading in Early Modern England. [Madison, Wisc.]: University of Wisconsin Press, [1984]. First edition. ix, 283 pp. Publisher's grey cloth fine, in moderately worn dust jacket. Internally clean. A very good copy. $20. * A work of literary criticism and political history that argues that the strict political censorship pervasive in 16th and 17th-century England did not simply silence authors. Instead, it actively shaped the development of early modern literature. The author posits that our modern concept of "literature" as a distinct type of writing with its own unique, complex rules was born out of a functional ambiguity designed to evade state consequences.
