[No. 1 is heavily tanned at the corners and edges; No. 2 is externally age-toned, lightly and fairly evenly on the front cover, more irregularly on the rear]. The first two catalogs issued by the Music Division of the Library of Congress, representing the inauguration of the Library's sale to the public of selected recordings from its Archive of American Folk Song. The Archive had been established in 1928 and by 1943 had collected more than 6,000 "instantaneous recordings made in the field by folklorists" (the most renowned of which were the father-and-son team of John and Alan Lomax, both of whom had left their shared post as head of the Archive the year before these catalogs were issued). The first publication -- the full title of which is "Catalog of Phonograph Records: Selected Titles from the Archive of American Folk Song, Issued to January, 1943" (it only became "No. 1" retroactively, with the issuance of the designated "No. 2" two years later) -- is 20 pages in length (including the covers), consisting of ten sheets, unbound but folded in the middle to form a "booklet" measuring 5-1/2" x 7-1/2". It lists the contents of all six albums (each consisting of five individual discs) that had been issued up to that time, along with the contents of a two-record album that had been issued "for the Friends of Music in the Library of Congress" in 1941. The six albums are: (I) Anglo-American Ballads (including one sung by Woody Guthrie, "The Gypsy Davy"; (II) Anglo-American Shanties, Lyric Songs, Dance Tunes and Spirituals; (III) Afro-American Spirituals, Work Songs, and Ballads; (IV) Afro-American Blues and Game Songs; (V) French Ballads and Dance Tunes [and] Spanish Religious Songs and Game Songs; (VI) Songs from the Iroquois Longhouse (indigenous peoples' songs, mostly recorded in Canada). For each song, the entry gives the performer(s), the date and place of recording, and the recordists. (Many of the "Afro-American" pieces were recorded in various prisons and work farms, mostly by the Lomaxes.) The second publication -- now properly typeset and printed, by the U.S. Government Printing Office (the earlier one looks to have been composed on a typewriter and printed by some offset process) -- is just 12 pages long, has a glued (not stapled or stitched) binding, and gives the impression that the enterprise is now on a bit more solid footing, as opposed to the provisional-appearing 1943 publication (that didn't even have the confidence to declare itself a "No. 1" and thereby imply the eventual appearance of a No. 2). It covers the additional five albums (now Arabic-numeraled) issued from January 1943 to December 1944: (7) Anglo-American Ballads; (8) Negro Work Songs and Calls; (9) Play and Dance Songs and Tunes; (10) Negro Religious Songs and Services; (11) Sacred Harp Singing. Library holdings of both publications are plentiful enough -- OCLC records a couple dozen of each -- but seemingly scarce in commerce, with no examples of either found for offer online as of October 2023.

Although I occasionally adopt the so-called "royal We," in fact ReadInk is just Me -- I handle everything from one end of the pipeline to the other: buying, cataloging, customer service, shipping, you name it. Nothing automated here -- just prompt, personal attention to every order. * Accurate Description. I use standard book-grading terminology -- Good, Very Good, Fine (with various +/- gradations as appropriate) -- and try to avoid both excessive jargon and obsessive amounts of detail. "Fine" is my highest grade, and a book has to be darn near perfect to earn it; even the smallest flaw or blemish will knock the grade down to "Near Fine.? I strive to present a faithful impression of a book?s condition and appearance; significant flaws such as remainder marks, previous owner's names, tears in the dust jacket, etc. are always noted, or if too numerous are reasonably summarized. * Information. Whenever practical, I try to include some information about a book's content in my listing, even if only a carefully chosen quotation from the dust jacket copy. This may sound like a small thing, but take a look sometime and you'll see how amazingly few sellers bother with this. On the occasions I let this slide, it's generally because the book is a common one, or because the title itself is sufficiently descriptive. * Care for the Book. I package all books with great care, to ensure they will withstand the rigors of the U.S. Postal System, and will reach their new owners in the same condition as advertised. My specific packaging techniques vary according to the needs of the book itself, but either a sturdy box or an unbendable package is always involved. (No bubble envelopes, ever, unless the contents are thoroughly protected within.) That?s all there is to ReadInk: just a guy who has loved books all my life (perhaps to excess) and entered the trade in my "middle years" to see what I could make of it. And I'm still finding out. You have the right to cancel this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.

The cancellation period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the the last good or the last lot or piece.

To exercise the right to cancel, you must inform us, ReadInk, ABAA/IOBA, 2261 W. 21st St., 90018, Los Angeles, California, U.S.A., 1 323-870-5017, of your decision to cancel this contract by a clear statement (e.g. a letter sent by post, fax or e-mail). You may use the attached model cancellation form, but it is not obligatory. You can also electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". If you use this option, we will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a cancellation on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.

To meet the cancellation deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right to cancel before the cancellation period has expired.

Effects of cancellation

If you cancel this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).

We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.

We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to cancel with contract.

We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.

We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.

You shall send back the goods or hand them over to us or ReadInk, ABAA/IOBA, 2261 W. 21st St., 90018, Los Angeles, California, U.S.A., 1 323-870-5017, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your cancellation from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.

Exceptions to the right of cancellation

The right of cancellation does not apply to:

the delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
the supply of digital content (including ebooks) which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not cancel it once delivery had started.
