First edition. 4 volumes bound into 2 books. Vol I published in 1889 and volumes II-IV in 1890. Edited by EE Morris prof of English at Melbourne University with original 36 full-page plates, hundreds of text-illustrations. some of which are full-page, text-maps, and 5 colour maps. A complete set of these books is rare and a historically significant treasure from the past. This is a handsome set half bound in black leather and black cloth sides. Title in gilt to spine and gilt design to front and back. Edges sprinkled red. Bookbinder's book plate on front end paper 'Carter Bros of Brighton'. For both books the binding is good, spines knocked and worn at the top and bottom, leather joint on back boards split, split all the way down on vols I-II and half way down on Vols III-IV. Corners also knocked and worn. There is foxing to some pages but overall the pages are clean. Previous owner's signature in ink on title page There are pencil markings to the front end papers.
