Item description from seller

The author, Rea, was an American engineer and publisher who founded the influential journal Far Eastern Review (Manila/Shanghai 1904-41) and counted among his connections four presidents of the USA, as well as many other powerful political, financial and industrial leaders. Initially sympathetic to China's cause, he later betrayed the Chinese nation and his status as a journalist in a brazen act of financial opportunism, by siding with, and publishing propaganda that supported Japan's brutal annexation of Manchuria. The present volume is prime evidence of this betrayal - the title page describes the author as 'Counsellor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Government of Manchoukuo' - essentially a paid employee of the Japanese puppet government in China. A fascinating example of the danger of non-objective, mercenary journalism. Spine darkened; losses to gold title lettering on front board; binding tight. Former owner's name on FFEP. Otherwise interior pages completely clean and unmarked. xiii, 425 pp., 8 b&w photos, 1 fold-out map, index. Size: 21 x 14 cm.…
