Item description from seller

Carte de visite (albumen photographic print mounted on card), approximately 4 x 2 1/2 inches. Photographer's stamp on verso. Top edge of print lightly scratched, mount lightly soiled. Very good to near fine. Portrait photograph of Amos Ruckman, a sword swallower with albinism, issued by J. W. Petty's New Orleans art gallery and likely photographed by Petty, himself. Biographical information about Ruckman currently appears to be limited to two inscriptions, probably in his own hand, on the versos of two contemporaneous cartes de visite in the SHOW HISTORY online archive: both describe him as "Circassian and Sword Swallower," one at age 21, one at 23. The "Circassian" designation is a nod to the "Circassian Beauties," first featured at Barnum's Museum in 1864, who wore their hair teased out and were billed as white slaves rescued from the Near East. The address appearing in the rubber stamp on the verso of the present CDV for J. W. Petty's gallery - 161 Poydras Street in New Orleans - appears to be a temporary one. Petty operated photography studios at various address on Poydras and elsewhere from the 1850s through the 1880s, but at 161 Poydras only in or around 1869. Ruckman may have performing at this time at the nearby Crescent City Museum, a dime museum located across from the St. Charles Hotel between 1865 and 1870. We have located no other examples of this portrait of Ruckman. …
