Item description from seller

A sought after first edition copy, in the original wraps, of this fascinating record of early "horseless road locomotion", complete with illustrations. One of the earliest books on the automobile, and particularly sought after for its wonderful illustrations of early "horseless carriages".First edition. In the scarce original surviving wraps.Frontispiece and forty figures illustrated across thirty wood-engraved and half-tone plates. Collated, complete. In 1896 three books were published that are now considered "automotive incunabula" (incunabula commonly used to refer to books published during the first fifty years of printing). They are Farman's technical and historical treatise, Knight's guide for owners and operators, and Sennett's'Carriages without horses shall go'(Norman Library of Science and Medicine 766).To the original paper is added remarks on the future of horseless road locomotion, notes on the new enactment, the Horseless Carriage Act, 1896, evolution in modes of travel, the "engineer" competition 1897 and local government board regulations. With an interesting chapter titled "Horseless Bread delivery", in which Sennett argues that automobiles would become major transportation methods for hauling heavy goods from rural areas into cities.Alfred Richard Sennett was a Member of the Advisory Committee on Road Improvements and of the Research Committee on Road Traction. Also well known for his urban planning work, Garden Cities in Theory and Practice. In the original wraps, with the front cover detached but present. Edge wear and dusting to the wraps. Rusting visible to the front staples. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with the odd spot or handling mark. Ownership inscription to title page. Good Only.…
