Item description from seller

A major work of the Charleston Renaissance and one of the essential visual records of the vanished Carolina Lowcountry rice culture. As the South Carolina Encyclopedia notes, it was "Smith's most ambitious volume," blending agricultural history, personal memoir, and fine art into a single elegiac document. First Trade Edition. Large 4to. 97pp. 30 tipped-in color plates reproducing the artist's watercolors, plus additional line drawings. Original gray cloth boards, red-lettered spine, front board stamped in red with a rice-plant vignette. From private collection. Cloth shows some rubbing and wear to spine ends. Clean, unmarked copy. Lacks the dust jacket. Cover protected in a mylar sleeve.
