William Henry Shakespear, 1878-1915, was one of the important Arabian travellers at the beginning of the twentieth century. However, he is not in DNB, and little information about him has hitherto been available. Lawrence did not meet him, although he is referred to in Ch. XLV of Seven Pillars of Wisdom. "He was one of those Englishmen Kipling delighted to picture. Nothing daunted him; he lived for enterprise and rejoiced in the handling of men; the more difficult and dangerous the job, the better it pleased him. He bore an English name not easy to add glory to, yet he succeeded' - The World, February 23rd, 1915.
