Bound in the publisher's original red cloth, the boards remain remarkably sharp with vivid, unrubbed gilt lettering to the spine, entirely avoiding the fading often seen on this title. The text block is square, tight, and robust, displaying only the lightest uniform toning to the page edges inherent to the publisher's paper stock. The binding is firm with no leaning or looseness. The original unclipped dust jacket maintains bright, crisp colours without sunning, and retaining sharp edges with only trivial signs of handling to the extremities. Internally, the pages are clean, crisp, and entirely free of foxing, dog-ears, or public-facing annotations, ensuring a very handsome presentation. Catalogue Note: This is a true first edition, first impression of Caprice and Rondo, the seventh instalment in Dorothy Dunnett's celebrated 'House of Niccolà ' series. The title page verso bears the full number line '1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2', confirming its status as the initial print run. Presented in the primary red cloth binding with the iconic mermaid logo of Michael Joseph to the spine, the book is complete with its original, unclipped dust jacket featuring the striking harbour illustration. While later printings and paperback variants are plentiful, true first impressions in such highly preserved, collector-grade condition remain sought after by enthusiasts of historical fiction. Set against the vibrant, treacherous backdrop of 1474 Europe, Caprice and Rondo follows the continuing exploits of Nicholas vander Poele. Exiled in the frozen port of Danzig, Nicholas has alienated friends and family through his Machiavellian schemes. Yet his extraordinary talents in trade, diplomacy, and war are too valuable to ignore, drawing the attention of rival powers in Poland, Venice, and Persia. As he navigates this intricate political dance, his estranged wife Gelis embarks on her own quest for truth, unearthing secrets that threaten to deal Nicholas a devastating blow. Dunnett delivers a masterful tale of intrigue, betrayal, and relentless ambition.
