US first edition, first impression. The book was originally published in Russia in 1966 and then banned the following year before being published in Europe in both Russian and English. This, the first US printing, has been translated by Rebecca Frank. Octavo, pp 616. Bound in grey cloth covered hard boards and in the original dust jacket, un-clipped and priced $8.50. A semi-autobiographical novel set in a hospital cancer ward in Tashkent explores Stalin's Great Purge of 1936-1938, where millions of Russians were sent to camps or exiled.
