Item description from seller

Later red cloth. 8vo. 108pp plus 4pp ads. First edition of this account of the author's experiences in the Mexican-American War. Isaac Ingalls Stevens was born in Andover, Mass. and graduated at the top of his class at West Point in 1839. He served as Adjutant of the Corps of Engineers during the Mexican-American War and saw action at Vera Cruz, Cerro Gordo and Contreras. After the war he acted as the first governor of Washington Territory. Stevens served in the Civil War and was killed at the Battle of Chantilly in 1862. This book was published in response to Major R.S. Ripley's two-volume "The War With Mexico" with which he took exception. The text is good with some light tanning and wear. The title page has an ink '4' at the top and a small white mark below it. Pages 31-41 have a small stain mark in the right-hand margin. The cloth binding is very good with light wear. HOWES S-962. RAINES, p. 195. SABIN 91522.
