Item description from seller

This is a Very Good Copy of this Book in a more Modern Full Calf Binding with gilt former owner's embossed in gilt to the front cover (see below for connection) Gilt titles to spine, all page edges are marbled and with marbled endpapers, with gilt lined ruled borders.A handsome copy with a coloured folding map of Italy to the verso of the title page. There is a former owner's detailed entry typed up and tipped onto the front endpaper, pertaining to the fact that John Stopford must have been a member of the family of the Earls of Courtown and that Maj Gen Hon Sir Edward Stopford served in the peninsula War and achieved a Gold Medal for Talavera,Vittoria and Nive.Hannibal’s passage through the Alps is one of the most legendary events in ancient military history. The route was treacherous, with narrow, snow-covered paths, deadly landslides, and hostile mountain tribes attacking the column. It took over two weeks, during which Hannibal lost a significant portion of his army, almost half, by some estimates. Yet the feat of leading elephants through the high mountain passes astonished even the Romans, who had not expected an attack from the north.A rare title and especially interesting due to the Stopford military association,8vo 195pp First Edition [1858].
