All near fine. The dust jacket is near fine, featuring a handsome portrait of Saint-Saens. It is bright and clean with no nicks or tears and no shelf wear. The pages of the book are bright and clean and the spine is tight. Black and white photo section. Two interesting loose articles included, one from the Independent in 1999. Being sold by a long established bookseller and not a mass lister., which infers that this book is just as described with no nasty surprises. The book will be strongly packed. KINDLY note that an overseas order will incur a small amount of extra postage due to weight. A really good copy of a book about a composer who had one of the longest careers in musical history.

Review
Brian Rees's thorough Life tries ill-judgedly to defend those areas of Saint-Saens' music criticism which are indefensibly thoughtless; it is the hard-won pluralism of late 20th-century music which makes us value Saint-Saens once again, rather than any attempt to turn the clock back to 1870 or 1910. He was a superb miniaturist, a gifted virtuoso with a sense of what others might perform--Rees is good on his generosity and commitment to keeping the music of the past fresh, while making innovations that both public and performers could follow. His account of Saint-Saens in his time is intelligent; this is music which had the intellectual strength, as well as the occasional superficial pretentiousness, of his bourgeois republicanism. --Roz Kaveney
