London and New York first edition F/F.Red cloth black lettering ,no inscriptions foxing or stains ,88 pages ,1 colour frontispiece ,13 black and white illustrations by harry rountree. The book was printed by the westminster press in the uk who printed separate wrappers for the the UK and the US markets,the US priced at US$2 and the UK 5/-. This copy has the US wrapper .There appears to be a mystery about the true UK first as up to now a few serious collectors including terry zobeck who is soon to publish the difinitive bibliography have been unable to find a copy .All the copies we have found are Ists with the cheap wrapper C1932 which has titles listed on the rear panel not published until 1932 ,so if you have a copy with the true Ist wrapper let us know as this has become the holy grain for o'brian collectors. Wed love to know if a copy exists .The wrapper would almost certainly have been printed at the same time as the US ,but perhaps something happened to them .Its unlikely that Putnams would have printed more US wrappers than the UK and I have seen 6 copies of the US of which I have 3 ,so until a copy with the UK wrapper turns up we have to assume that at this point the true Ist is the US ,but terry and I would love to be proved wrong.
