Item description from seller

Quarto, 246 pages, beige cloth. Scarce. Ralph Rodney Root taught landscape gardening at the University of Illinois. His previous books covered landscape gardening. This innovative work presents his arguments for Countourscaping. " . the opinion of the many [is] that anyone having anyting to do with horticultural things is a landscape architect. A result of this general misunderstanding is that a larger percentage of landscaping is done witout the aid of trained professional landscapers and consists only of a display use of decorative plant material with no foundation of design . that begins with the basic principles of design and ends with a funtional countoural use of color form plant material and light, in designed countourscaping. The basic element of all countourscaping is color form plant material and light and it is by its right selection, to fit both the peculiar environmental and aesthetic requirements of each project, that begins the foundation of countourscaping as a fine art." - p.15. Drawings by Margrette Oatway Dornbusch; landscape renderings by Frank Polito; photographs by Vories Fisher.

Store description

Joyce And Company, established 1975, works out of an office near Chicago's Loop. There are usually 15-20,000 books on-site and available for browsing. Mr. Joyce was a founding partner of the former Chicago Rare Book Center, of Chicago and Evanston, Illinois. Proprietor Tom Joyce appeared regularly as the book appraiser on "The Appraisal Fair", seen on Home And Garden Television, HGTV. We still do appraisals on a wide variety of subjects, from literature to history, fine books, children's, presses, theology, law, medicine, maps, autographs. These topics are reflected in our inventory, and much more, including Sherlockiana. In addition to regional institutions nearby Chicago and Illinois, we have been able to place rare materials with the American Antiquarian Society, The Library of Congress, The Bodleian Library, Harvard and Yale Universities, the Presidential Libraries of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, et cetera.
