From the Author
Conceived In Liberty is a book about two Civil War leaders, but in many ways it is not simply just another "Civil War book." Unlike many others in this genre, the book does not begin with Fort Sumter or end with Appomattox; rather, Conceived In Liberty is the story of America in the 19th Century as told through the eyes of two of its most important protagonists. Nor is Conceived In Liberty a retelling of great battles and leaders, but the story of two important American families -- from two ends of the continent. The war itself is embedded in the experience of pioneer Alabama and Maine, and reverberates well into the "silent civil war" of reconstruction that followed Lee's surrender. I intended to "push the envelope" of Civil War history, by focusing not just on battles and leaders (though there is plenty of that), but also on the nascent women's movement, abolitionism, temperance and the revival of Calvinist Christianity. I welcome all reader comments and hope everyone enjoys Conceived In Liberty as much as I did in writing it.
