Item description from seller

.First edition. Tall 8vo. iii, 293 pp. Thompson's heirs successfully sued for the protection of his patents for a furnace that employed various forms of refuse as fuel. Preface: "In the decision of patent cases involving the considerations of scientific principles, the courts are resorting, much more than formerly, to the advice and assistance of men of science, supposed to be familiar with the matters under discussion; and, aside from simple points of law, such cases are, in a great measure, decided upon the balance of scientific testimony." Faded inscription on front wrapper, "To Mr. Parsons with kind regards of B. Silliman." OCLC records four copies (Columbia, New York Public, Rensselaer Polytech Institute, Yale). Very good. Original printed wrappers (some soiling, edges chipped and with several tears). (#6178).
