1st Printing. 288 pages. Published in 2018. New And Definitive translations of the author's work. One of the most significant literary events of our time. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent printings, of which there are many. Published in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original only by a University Press. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Bruno Schulz's "Collected Stories" in fresh and definitive English translations by Madeline G. Levine. "Brings together all of Schulz's published stories: 'Cinnamon Shops', his most famous collection (also known as 'The Street of Crocodiles'), 'Sanatorium Under The Hourglass', and four stories that he did not include in either of his two collections. Madeline G. Levine's masterful new translation shows contemporary readers how Schulz, often compared to Proust and Kafka, reveals the workings of memory and consciousness" (Publisher's blurb). His is a love for all forms of earthly life - it's not just "empathy" - and Isaac Bashevis Singer is right to point out that in this sense, he went even deeper than either Kafka or Proust. His genius enabled him to create a landscape, a mood, a sensation, a feeling, and in the end, a universe that come alive "with unpredictable spirit-force, where every living tissue contains ghosts". Bruno Schulz is one of the exemplary souls who have somehow prevailed in our world of soul-killers: ALL great art and literature have a spiritual dimension and finally, commitment, NOT to be confused with religiosity. "A kind of DNA code for the secret language of the imagination" (Cynthia Ozick). An absolute "must-have" title for Bruno Schulz collectors. This title is a great collection. As far as we know, this is the only copy of First Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws or are in multiple subsequent printings. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER BRUNO SCHULZ TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0810136600.…
