Under the terms of this amendment to Chinese immigration laws in Canada, persons who ceased to be in an exempt class of immigrants became liable for paying the $500 Head Tax (instituted in 1903), and if payment was not made the immigrant could be deported. Further, if an immigration officer suspected any person of Chinese origin to be in Canada illegally, the person in question could be arrested. If the person was unable to provide sufficient proof of their legal status, the person could be detained in custody, charged before a magistrate, and even deported. Seller Inventory # 065
