In a real sense Tian Yuan's free brush work is a record of art as a "written" language beyond the confines of script. The last illustration is of beloved Pigsy of the 16th century tale of the Monkey King --- a major presence in popular operas, and introduced to the West through translations of British sinologist Arthur Waley (1889-1966).
