Carcajou by Rutherford G. Montgomery is one of the author's best-known wilderness adventure novels for younger readers. The title refers to the carcajou, the French-Canadian name for the wolverine, an animal long regarded in northern folklore as cunning, fearless, destructive, and almost supernatural. The novel is set in the remote forests and mountains of northern North America. Rather than making a human character the centre of the story, Montgomery focuses on the wolverine itself. Carcajou is portrayed as a powerful and crafty wilderness outlaw, feared by trappers, hunters, and other animals alike. According to the contemporary description, Carcajou is "a wilderness villain" who encounters a young Indigenous trapper and his pet grizzly bear, creating the central conflict of the story.
