No. 126]".Henry Clay, who served as Secretary of State under John Quincy Adams, here reports that "all the information in the Department of State" regarding the disposition of the African Captives seized from the ships Merino, Constitution and Louisa "has been communicated to the House by the President of the United States".Pensacola, the capital of Spanish Florida was taken by General Andrew Jackson on May 24th, 1818. Jackson's invasion took place at the time of the First Seminole War and aimed to protect American settlements from Indian attacks. The captains of the three schooners, "Merino [Mariano]", "Constitution" and "Louisa", which were carrying a cargo of slaves from the Spanish colonies in Havana to Pensacola were unaware that Pensacola was now in U.S. hands. The ships and their cargo of 84 slaves were seized. A legal dispute ensued which dragged on for several years. Seller Inventory # 95964
