Originally translated, edited, and annotated by George Butler Griffin, they were published in 1891 by the Historical Society of Southern California under the title Documents from the Sutro Collection. That volume has long been out of print, and the documents themselves, whether originals or transcriptions, were lost in the San Francisco Fire of 1906. In this bilingual edition, Donald C. Cutter makes available once again these key documents, with amended translations and transcriptions, newly edited in the light of three~quarters of a century of subsequent study of California history. In his added annotation and extensive introduction, Cutter covers the authors of the documents and provides new information on the documents as well as their contents. The documents reflect two periods in California history covering almost two hundred years, from 1584 to 1774, with twelve of them dating from the sixteenth century. The earlier period concentrates on the merchant~navigator Sebastián Vizcaíno, who meticulously explored the coast of California in 1602~1603. The later period is the era of colonization associated with the Sacred Expedition to extend Spanish Catholic Christianity to the heathen Indians and the explorations associated with it. Two of the documents were written by Father Junipero Serra, president of the Franciscan missions of California and founder of nine of California's missions. Authors of other documents include Father Tomás de la Peña and Father Juan Crespi, and among the important personages figuring in the documents is Juan Pérez, "the foremost maritime figure in the early settlement of Alta California. Published here as Volume 57 of THE AMERICAN EXPLORATION AND TRAVEL SERIES, these significant documents illustrate not only the color and excitement of exploration but also the grueling efforts involved in settlement and missionary work.
