Add to basketHALLOWELL, EMILY (c.1871 - 1935). Calhoun Plantation Songs. Boston: C. W. Thompson & Co., 1901. FIRST EDITION. 4to, tan cloth spine with tan boards, 62 pp. including Index, light foxing on end pages small stain on rear cover, first two leaves are slightly separated from the binding, minor wear. Hallowell (of West Medford, MA) also wrote the Preface to this work that contains more than 50 songs with music and lyrics. Very scarce first edition of this important work.-----
The songs in this volume were sung by the students at the Calhoun Colored School (1892-1945) of Calhoun, Lowndes County, Alabama and compiled & edited by Hallowell. The school was founded in 1892 by Charlotte R. Thorn of New Haven, Connecticut and Mabel W. Dillingham of Boston, Massachusetts. Hallowell was active in a charity group in Boston, the Calhoun Club, that raised funds and collected clothing, books, and toys for the students at the school (Boston Evening Transcript, various dates). It?s apparent from her Preface that she taught or volunteered at the school for an unknown period of time, and in 1916 was mentioned in an article as being a vice principal (New York Age, 25 May 1916).-----
Emily was the daughter of Edward Needles Hallowell, the Union Army officer who helped recruit black soldiers for the 54th Massachusetts Infantry. He took over command of the regiment after its commander, Robert Gould Shaw, was killed at Fort Wagner.
