Item description from seller

No additional standard domestic shipping on this heavy book. Lightest shelf wear to the book and priced, protected jacket which is creased on the front panel and flap. 1st printing. Clean and unmarked. A classic of Roman Catholic literature and liturgy. Alban Butler (October 24 NS, 1710 - St-Omer, France May 15, 1773), English Roman Catholic priest and hagiographer, was born at Appletree, Northamptonshire. He was educated at the English college, Douai, where on his ordination to the priesthood in 1735 he held successively the chairs of philosophy and divinity. He labored for some time as a missionary priest in Staffordshire, held several positions as tutor to young Roman Catholic noblemen, and was finally appointed president of the English seminary at St Omer, where he remained till his death. This is the Concise Edition of Butler's great work, The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs and Other Principal Saints ("Butler's Lives"), the result of thirty years study (first published in four volumes, London, 1756-1759), has passed through many editions and translations (best edition, including valuable notes, Dublin, 12 vols. 1779-1780). This edition features saints from many nations and backgrounds and includes new articles on recently canonized saints. The index offers the list of saints from the complete edition, and includes all new canonizations and new dates, making it the most up-to-date listing of saints available at the time of publication. Butler's Lives of the Saints remains a remarkable reference source and, through its comprehensive biographies, a valuable aid to devotion and a rich source of historical information.
