Item description from seller

Octavo. 16pp. and 16 plates each. Original wraps with decorative color design on cover, rendered lithographically, with white, black, orange and blue lettering on covers; protected by modern mylar. Wraps designed by the French painter Georges Valmier. After phases as a impressionistic and cubist painter Valmier turned to Abstractionis in 1921, as is obvious in the cover design. He had a solo exhibition at Rosenberg's gallery in 1921. Valmier also designed sets and costurmes for theater and ballet. Collection of sixteen issues of the Bulletin de L'Effort Moderne including Nos. 4 through 20, 1924 and 1925, with only No. 11, January 1925, missing. The publication was divided equally into text and reproductions of artwork, the latter printed to white paper. The text contributions include luminaries like J. J. P. Oud, Fernand Leger, Théo van Doesburg, Maurice Raynal, Henri van de Velde, F. T. Marinetti, Albert Gleizes, Vinició Paladini, Gino Severini, David Kakabadzé, Theo v. Doesburg, among others, and the artist works reproduced on recto and verso of sixteen heavy white paper include Léger, Picasso, Braque, van Doesburg, Severini, Czaky, Delauney, Gris, Herbin, Derain, Metzinger, Cornet, Marcel Breuer, Beaudin de Chirico, Max Ernst, Matisse, de Vlaminck, Chagall, Baumeister, Csahy, Lipchitz, Ozenfant, Zak, among others, with usually two pages depicting interior or architectural designs. The majority of contributors of text and artwork were regularly published in the magazine. Rosenberg got started in his father's antique business with his brother Paul. In 1906 the brothers took over the business specializing in 20th-century art. In 1910 they parted commercially and Léonce took an interest in avant-garde art and started to acquire Cubist art, many of them from the dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler. By the end of 1916 he contracted artists like Lipchitz, Diego Rivera, Juan Gris and George Braque. In 1921 Rosenberg was able to establish himself as an "expert" in the auctioning of Kahnweiler's artwork which had been seized by the French government during the war. Though Kahnweiler managed to reacquire works by Gris and Braque Rosenberg also was able to acquire a number of works at knockdown prices. Kahnweiler, however, did acknowledge that Rosenberg "assumed during the war-and this will be his lasting honor-the task that I could no longer fullfill: the defense of Cubism." Rosenberg had renamed his gallery to Galerie de L'Effort Moderne in 1918 to focus on avant garde, especially Cubism. The gallery became an umbrella for avant garde artists and with the establishment of the journal of the same name in 1924 a number of the artist Rosenberg worked with contributed to the periodical. Text in French. Some light wear along edges and some light staining, mostly on back covers, and some light, occasional chipping along edges. Centerfold of No. 4 loose but present. Laid into No. 20 a printed order form for the magazine. …
