Stein was a major figure in regional modern architecture in the Bay area of California in the 1940s and 1950s, after studies at Cranbrook under Eliel Saarinen and Carl Milles and work with Richard Neutra in the late 1930s. He worked collaboratively with architects Gregory Ain and John Funk, and with landscape architects Garrett Eckbo and Robert Royston.
