London, published by John Day and others, 1824. First edition. Quarto. [4], (viii), 176pp, (xl), 16pp, 16pp, [4]. Illustrated with an engraved portrait frontispiece and 141 full page engraved plates. A comprehensive manual covering all of the principal disciplines involved in the design and construction of buildings. Nicholson was a prolific author in all fields of architecture and the construction of buildings producing many popular books in those fields over the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This work dwells heavily on the theoretical aspects of building geometry with numerous examples and exercises aimed at offering practical solutions to the complex geometry of roofs, curved walls, domes etc. Having covered geometry, the book continues on to the subject of masonry, covering all aspects of stone cutting and the design and construction of buildings in stone including the construction of arches, stairs, niches etc. The next section covers carpentry, from the basics of carpenters joints to the design and construction of roofs, girders, trusses and all aspects of joinery such as doors and windows and staircases. The final section gives an overview of classical architecture and is followed by an appendix covering even more complex geometry as applied to architecture. A comprehensive work, seemingly intended as a detailed reference for architects, builders and those involved in building design. Bound in contemporary full mottled calf with full gilt decoration to the spine and marbled endpapers. Neatly rebacked with the original spine laid down. The first two or three pages are a little browned. Otherwise, a clean copy with the text block sound and the binding in good condition.
