1887, 1st edition thus - being the first edition edited by George Birkbeck Hill, and including both Boswell's 'Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides', and Johnson's 'Diary of a Journey into North Wales'. Six Volumes. Octavo's. xxvii, [1 errata], 522; 480; [vi], 464; [vi], 446; [viii], 460; lxxiv[ii], 324pp. With fourteen engraved illustrations including, a number of portraits of Johnson from Sir Joshua Reynolds' paintings, and many facsimiles of Johnson's handwriting, the Round Robin plate, a map of Johnson and Boswell's tour through the Hebrides and a chart of Johnson's contemporaries. Uniformly bound in a modern quarter crimson morocco, over maroon cloth sides, spines in gilt. Bindings square and tight. A couple of boards with minor markings. Top edge gilt (a little dulled/dust-soiled). New end papers. A little light spotting to text-blocks. Generally clean within. A 'Near Fine' set.
