"The scope of this book is much greater than its title may suggest. Tracing the idea of naming a bottle or jug of wine from the Ancient World, the author deals in turn with the 17th century wine-jugs and the evolution of the wine-bottle and glass decanter. Mention should be made of the illustrations on which the utmost care and expert knowledge has been bestowed." (Publisher). Covering the evolution of the wine-label, the silver wine-label, Battersea Enamels, Sheffield plate, and the classifications of designs. Alphabetical list of names and notes on the lesser known wines with a bibliography at rear. Illustrated with b/w offset reproductions of enamel, porcelain, rare names and four uncommon names at rear. Two original letters from Penzer to Mrs. Munro, dated June and July 1953, in envelope taped to inside back cover. DJ with some wear along top edge with small closed tears and slight creasing, price clipped. Binding with small bumps at middle of top and bottom of covers. Some offsetting on half-title and title page. DJ in overall good+, binding and interior in very good condition. Mrs. Munro was the author of English Silver Cream Jugs of the eighteenth century. Penzer asks her for a copy in one o fthe letters. Seller Inventory # 44291
