A very bright copy of this scarce workThis is one of several 'The Book of the Dead' publications issued by the British museum in the late nineteenth century. It showcases the real funerary texts held in their collections and made them available to a wider audience.With transcripts and translations by E A Wallis Budge, the keeper of Egyptian and Assyrian antiquities at the British museum.The papyri featured in this book form a funerary text, known as the 'Book of the Dead'. 'Book of the Dead' is an ancient Egyptian funerary text containing spells intended to assist the deceased's journey through Duat, or the underworld into the afterlife. They were typically placed in the coffins or burial chamber of the deceased. There was no single or canonical 'Book of the Dead' and evidence shows some people commissioned their own copies choosing spells they thought would be most vital to them.This particular publication contains four papyri, of 'Hunefer' (11 coloured plates), 'Anhai' (8 coloured plates), 'Kerasher' (3 plates) and 'Netchemet' (12 plates). The work also contains supplementary text from the Papyrus of Nu (63 plates).Collated, complete. In a half morocco binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing to the spine and extremities. A few light marks to the boards. Internally, generally firmly bound. Plate 9 of the 'Netchemet' papyrus is detached but present. This detached leaf is chipped to the edges, as is common with detached leaves. Pages are bright with just the occasional light spots. Very Good.
