An early book of common prayer, printed in Sunderland by Summers & Young for Craddock & Joy, and J Stratford of London. The original leather boards and spine have been retained in a high quality re-back in leather which will remain supple for perhaps centuries to come - it already has served many decades of new life for this handsome and atmospheric old book. The pages are age yellowed with moderate mottling and the odd brown blotch, edge tear and corner-fold. Insides smell beautifully fruity and churchy, as you would hope. The whole is unpaginated, running well into the high hundreds, two inches thick. There is an introductory discourse, preface, calendar with table of lessons, a lot of information on calendars and feasts, then the psalms, finishing off with a bound-in section "The Communion-Office for the use of the Church of Scotland, as far as concerneth the ministration of the holy sacrament. Edinburgh Drummond and Ossian's Head, 1764. There is one missing page corner, minor loss of text. The adjacent corner has been sewn back together with very fine thread! This is a very complex book and clearly intended for use by the minister himself. The spine has slightly raised bands, the leather title label with gilt simply says "Common Prayer".
