1690 1ed John Overall Convocation Church of England King James Gunpowder Plot John Overall was an early 17th-century English Anglican bishop, most notably the dean of St. Paul s in London during the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. In 1606, the Convocation drew up numerous canons for the Church, of which, none of them were sanctioned by King James. Overall pushed for new forms of government thus forcing the king to reject the book. Following the king s rejection, the book did not see print until 1690, nearly a century later by William Sancroft. This 1690 first edition of Overall includes two full-page portrait engravings as well as entire sections printed completely in Old English blackletter.
