About this Item
The worship of animals and birds occurred in virtually every ancient civilisation, of which China is certainly no exception. Birds in particular, in China-existing or mythological species, or hybrid bird-humans-heralded fortune, good or bad, offered auspicious omens, represented ancestral spirits and were considered to be the vehicles on which the soul was transported to the netherworld. In this unique and wide-ranging study, Waterbury examines the presence of bird imagery and symbolism in China, from the paleolithic through to the Six Dynasties, on wall paintings, free standing jade and bronze sculpture, and high relief images on ancient bronze vessels and mirrors, comparing these depictions with those of other cultures engaged in similar beliefs. xiv, 191 pp., 61 full page b&w plates, extensive bibliography, index. First and only edition, limited to 350 copies only, of which this is no. 39. Lower front cover has minor surface damage but otherwise a very good copy in slipcase, signed dedication by author on FEP.
