The worship of animals and birds occurred in virtually every ancient civilisation, of which China is certainly no exception. Birds in particular, in China-existing or mythological species, or hybrid bird-humans-heralded fortune, good or bad, offered auspicious omens, represented ancestral spirits and were considered to be the vehicles on which the soul was transported to the netherworld.
