Born of the University of Chicago's refusal to publish 'Old Angel Midnight' by Jack Kerouac and 'Ten Episodes from Naked Lunch' by William Burroughs in the 'Chicago Reader', both included in 'Big Table' #1 suppressed by the Chicago Post Office, the ban overturned by the courts, into print and creating enough momentum for the four issues that followed, containing work by, among many: Antonin Artaud, John Ashbery, Paul Blackburn, Paul Bowles, Edward Dahlberg, Robert Duncan, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Jean Genet, Allen Ginsberg, Leon Golub, Franz Kline, Pablo Neruda, 'The New Poets', Frank O'Hara, and Harold Rosenberg; and, from this distance, wonderful period advertising for bookshops, publishers and books; and, appearing contemporaneously with the Penguin Lady Chatterley controversy and trial in London, an indicator of the literature of the decade about to begin.
