Item description from seller

Publisher's full blue cloth, spine in six compartments separated by silver gilt borders, gilt lettering in three compartments, top edge red. NB: Beyond the Tragic Vision: The Quest for Identity in the Nineteenth Century is a landmark work of intellectual history written by American cultural historian Morse Peckham and originally published in 1962. The book uncovers a unified "central nerve" running through 19th-century philosophy, literature, music, and painting. Peckham argues that following the collapse of the Enlightenment at the end of the 18th century, humanity could no longer rely on an objective, divinely ordered world to provide meaning. Instead, the modern individual was forced to anchor order, values, and meaning within their own internal identity.Peckham breaks down this historical evolution of self-discovery into four distinct aesthetic and intellectual stages: (1) Romanticism (Discovery and Analogy): The initial shift where thinkers attempted to bridge the gap from the inner human experience to the external world of nature. (2) Transcendentalism: The elevation of the self to a spiritual framework, seeking a higher, universal reality built outward from human consciousness. (3) Objectism (Realism or Naturalism): A pivot toward a colder, more clinical observation of reality, stripped of comfortable illusions. (4) Stylism (Aestheticism): An emphasis on form, artifice, and style as the ultimate means of imposing order on a chaotic world. The book culminates in the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, whom Peckham credits with realizing that human identity exists entirely without grounds in nature or God. By accepting this, late 19th-century culture learned to embrace life's inherent contradictions and tragedies without relying on artificial or comforting reconciliations. The volume is in virtually perfect condition showing only the slightest shelf-wear, else as new; unmarked, tight, square, and clean. The unclipped ($7.50) dust jacket, now in Mylar is chipped and torn with loss. FINE/FAIR. Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall. 380 pages.…
