Item description from seller

Publication: Glossop, Derbyshire, The Transport Publishing Company, 1982 Formatting: 4to, pp. 302. Condition Report: Near Fine. The publisher's original red boards remain exceptionally sharp, clean, and unbowed, featuring bright, unoxidised gilt tooling to the spine and front board. The binding is remarkably tight and square, displaying no discernible shelf-wear, bumping, or rubbing to the extremities. Internally, the pages are crisp, bright, and completely free of foxing or extraneous markings, retaining a pristine quality throughout. The original dust jacket is predominantly clean and vibrant on the front and rear panels. However, there is noticeable sunning to the red background of the spine panel, a common occurrence for this title, though the lettering remains perfectly legible. Overall, this is a highly attractive, tightly bound, and well-preserved copy. Catalogue Note: First edition. This volume is comprehensively illustrated with photographs and detailed appendices, documenting the firm's history from its founding in 1854 through to the last years of steam. The book was published in Glossop, Derbyshire by The Transport Publishing Company. This copy features the standard printed sign-off by author Richard L. Hills to the introduction page, dated April 1982. The dust jacket is unclipped, retaining the original printed price to the lower rear panel. While later reprints (such as the 1998 third edition) are frequently encountered, true first editions in such commendable, tight condition are increasingly uncommon on the open market. A definitive and exhaustive history of one of Britain's most prolific engineering firms, Beyer, Peacock & Company. Established at the Gorton Foundry in Manchester in 1854, the company manufactured thousands of locomotives over a century of operation. Hills and Patrick provide a meticulously researched chronological account of the firm's evolution, from its early partnerships to its eventual closure, paying particular attention to the revolutionary Beyer-Garratt articulated locomotives that became a mainstay of railways across the globe. An indispensable reference work for railway historians and steam enthusiasts alike.…
