Beryl Cook has long been Britain's favourite artist. Described by Victoria Wood as 'Rubens with jokes', her ability to zoom in on a detail and exaggerate it for the delight of the viewer has made her as popular as any of our best-loved comedians. In fact, Dawn French wrote a foreword to her last book, Cruising. Her perception, wit and appetite for all forms of human behaviour - and the sheer pleasure they give to viewers of her work - can sometimes belie the sheer mastery of her craft. There has never before been a retrospective of her work. Beryl Cook: The Bumper Edition is a wonderfully lavish publication celebrating the unique art of Beryl Cook across the span of her long career. Arranged thematically, chapters fall under the following headings: Plymouth by Night, Plymouth by Day, London, Round Britain, USA, Globetrotter, Homes and Gardens, Animals, Sport and Recreation, Flights of Fancy. With over 300 pictures in colour throughout, the Bumper Edition will not only prove to be the most enjoyable art book of the Christmas season, but will endure as Beryl Cook's popularity has endured.

Beryl Cook started painting 40 years ago. Her previous careers as a show girl, model, and b & b landlady have provided extensive material for her work.
