From the joy in their "jingling and tinkling" to their frightening "moaning and groaning," the Bells grow ever more dark and chaotic as the poem progresses. Along with brilliant illustrations that perfectly match Poe's tone and progression, this truly is, as Richard Wilbur characterized, "a tour ð ¥ð ¦ ð §ð °ð ð ¤ð ¦" of poetic resonance and onomatopoeic brilliance. While Poe attempted several times to have this poem published during his lifetime, it tragically would not be until 6 months after his death, in November of 1849. It is here published and bound for the first time in a stand-alone and illustrated form.
