After her initial training in Glasgow, Lynn moved south to settle in Shropshire. She writes with affection of the multitude of colourful characters who she met as patients and work colleagues over her 36 years of dedicated service.

The pages are rich with anecdote and humour, blended with the sadness and pathos that inevitably came with her work. In her own life, too, she had to cope with the early loss of both her parents.

A qualified State Registered Nurse, midwife and specialist Practice Nurse, Lynn spent those 36 years at the forefront of the nursing profession, caring for her community.

About the Author

Lillian Smart, always known as Lynn, was born in Scotland in 1945. She lost both her parents at an early age. She lived in Lanark until she was 15, when she left school and moved to Glasgow. Her first job was in a ladies' fashion shop, but her ambition was always to become a nurse. Too young to start her training, she filled in the time by working as a receptionist/typist at Glasgow University Students Union. She began nursing at the Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow, qualifying as a State Registered Nurse in 1966. She then moved to Shropshire to train as a State Certified Midwife.

After her marriage she became one of Shropshire's first practice nurses, and gained an Honours degree in Community Health. She continued her professional development by becoming a Specialist Practitioner in GP Nursing. Lynn worked at the same GP surgery for 36 years, finally retiring in 2005.
