Peter Taylor and I wanted to write a book for amateur astronomers on a subject which is often overlooked by deep-sky observers: The Sun. The Sun is an ever-churning nuclear furnace, with its face mirroring magnetic storms of unbelievable proprotion. Follow the history of solar astronomers, from earliest astronomer-priests through the most current solar research. Along the way, you'll learn how to do solar experiments on your own, including building a simple magnetometer, a solar oven, and explore the solar spectrum. For the hands-on amateur, we include solar observing methods such as solar projection, full aperture solar filtering, and a sophisticated hydrogen alpha set-up. Believe it or not, you can make meaningful scientific solar observations using only a properly filtered 60mm telescope! Peter Taylor is the Chairman of the Solar Division of AAVSO (American Asociation of Variable Star Observers). He details (while keeping simple) the techniques for sun-spot counting, and how you can join the program, with your observations being used by solar professionals.
