Item description from seller

Octavo, 662pp., plus Index. A fresh, clean copy, about fine, in the publisher's reddish-brown cloth, with only mild spotting to the gutters, a nice bookplate (Olive Gale McLean) to the front paste-down, and just a few contemporary ink notations (possibly authorial? - see below) in the text. A book always found either with serious wear or repaired, this is, by contrast, a nicely preserved example. SIGNED and floridly INSCRIBED by Ridley on the first blank leaf: Compliments of Bromfield L. Ridley to Miss Olive Gale Hill Washington City Sept 28th 1916. Read it in this gloaming, and when the gethering dusk doth blur the pages, [sit?] with a heart too full for utterance, and think it over B. L. R." Atthe time of the inscription, Olive Gale Hill was engaged to Ridley's nephew, Rear Admiral Ridley McLean (who had been raised by his uncle after being orphaned as a teenager). Bromfield Ridley died less than six months after the inscription, in January 1917. The few ink notations (one of which is a correction) appear to be in Ridley's slightly inscrutable hand. Nevins writes: "Although rambling and poorly organized, this narrative does contain a wealthy of detail (including documents) of the war in the West." A detailed account of an officer under A. P. Stewart in the Army of the Tennessee. Genuinely scarce in this condition, and rare signed. Nevins I, p. 42; Dornbusch III 1181.

Store description

As a small, independent bookseller in Cleveland, Ohio, I deal in general used, rare, and antiquarian books, autographs, manuscripts, pamphlets, and personal and family papers in all subjects. My family has been in the antiquarian book business since 1971. Are you moving, downsizing, or doing some spring cleaning? Did you inherit or otherwise come into some old books? Or, maybe you've collected modern novels from the last thirty or fifty years. No matter what kinds of books you have, we'd love to take a look at them! We travel throughout Ohio, western Pennsylvania and New York, southern Michigan, and eastern Indiana, and will travel farther in some cases to look at whole libraries or even just a few particularly interesting books. Give us a call at (216) 352-3940 and we can talk more about the kinds of books you have.
