Original red cloth on boards. Gift notes. Front hinge cracked. Hand soil. Meade lived only to the age of 31 years, but he had a whirlwind existence as a writer, illustrator, and gardener. His favourite subjects seemed to be his fellow Virginians. This book tackles the problem as to how whites can help blacks. A young woman, part white, marries a black man who contracts TB. In order to prevent being evicted, the woman sells herself to the landlord's son. Extensive pencil writing on rear endpapers, not affecting text. 310 pp. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
