No library markings except for a; Philip Wardman, an ordinary young man, sports one eccentricity: a neurotic fear of violence and death. Like Ferdinand, he likes to smell the flowers, particularly those in his mother's garden, where stands a statue of the goddess Flora, who over time has come to represent all the female virtues. Imagine Philip's consternation when, at his sister's wedding, he encounters a living incarnation of the marble Flora: Senta Pelham, an actress happily contemptuous of conventional morality. She comes to him that night. But Senta has a dark side. Where death frightens Philip, it fascinates her. She proposes a wicked test: to prove his love he needs to kill. ; Ex-Lib; 9.25 x 6 x 1 inches; 259 pages Very Good discard stamp on front endpaper. Two small dots bottom edge. Light edge wrinkling to jacket.

Review
"Every sentence is appallingly, shockingly convincing . . . a memorably harrowing journey through sick and weak minds, written with a skill that makes it relentlessly gripping" (The Times)
"To read her at her best - and The Bridesmaid is perhaps her best book - is like stepping on to a trundling country bus and feeling it turn into a roller coaster" (Sunday Times)
"If Ruth Rendell were not slotted into the category of writer of mystery novels, she would have won the Booker long ago" (Books of the Year, Evening Standard)
"Ruth Rendell, like all the great creators of crime fiction, keeps her pact with the reader. There’s a murder mystery, there are clues, there is a solution. It’s a very satisfying read" (Giles Brandreth)
