Ex-library copy. First edition (not stated). xiv, 194 pages. Hardcover; H 24cm x L 15.75cm. Dust jacket rubbed, slight color fading to spine panel with ends creased and library shelf sticker affixed at heel, slight wear at flap fold ends too. Red cloth with bright silver stamped spine lettering, tape impressions at top and bottom edges of boards. Library stamps upon top and bottom edges. Front free endpaper removed as might be a front flyleaf or half-title (first leaf present is title/copyright pages). Usual library stamps and marks upon title page but interior leaves are otherwise quite clean with no other library markings readily apparent after a quick perusal. Binding is firm. Ousby "traces the transformation of the detective in British fiction from rogue to hero . . . [and] . . . draws upon contemporary documents and modern histories of the police to show the marked difference between the fictional creation and the reality" (from the dj front flap).
