FIRST EDITION 1966. Story of an old Welsh pony written and illustrated by Keeping. Slim 4to, 250 x 205 mm, 10 x 8 inches, original publisher's pictorial colour illustrated boards and endpapers, (34) pages. Brilliant coloured illustrations filling every page. Simple text inset. Slightest rub to head and tail of spine and corners. No inscriptions, near Fine copy in very good plus DUSTWRAPPER (dw: not price clipped, very slightly worn at head and tail of spine and corners, 10 mm (½") closed tear at head of spine, small neat paper repair on verso, very slightly darkened on spine, very small brown stain at foot of lower hinge and lower fold). The artist's second book, Keeping apparently felt unable to develop his story without a real animal so he acquired a 20 year old pony from a junk dealer and kept it in a stable in his garden. Unpaginated story book with full-page colour illustrations throughout and a few lines of text per page. Contents clean and bright. Charles William James Keeping (22 September 1924 16 May 1988) was an English illustrator, children's book author and lithographer. He made the illustrations for Rosemary Sutcliff's historical novels for children, and he created more than twenty picture books. He also illustrated the complete works of Charles Dickens for the Folio Society. Keeping created 15 full-colour picture books for Oxford University Press. His former teacher and fellow illustrator Nigel Lambourne has described him as "one of the few great illustrators we've got. RightWayUp Books aims to provide accurate and detailed descriptions.
